Throughout my first semester at the University of Central Oklahoma,
I have learned many valuable techniques and writing skills in my English Composition class. This
class is designed to be more than just sitting at your desk and writing an essay everyday. The
class is meant to be an eye-opener to the world of creative writing, and learning
about words, and their meanings. Through taking this course, l have learned to come to appreciate that
every writer has his/her own style of writing just as we all have our different tastes in clothing,
music etc., and that in writing there is purpose, and a message trying to be displayed through the words.
During most of highschool for me, as I'm sure with most other students, at the mention of "essay", one word came to mind:
disaster. Before taking this course, I hated essays with a passion. It seemed
that in my highschool english class, all we ever did was come to class, have a seat, and write another essay. After awhile,
writing essays became my pet-peeve!
However, with the help of this class, I've come to realize that writing essays can actually be fun,
and that there are many different types of essays. My favorite assignment
through the duration of the class was the personal essay that we were to write about a special person/place in our lives.
By doing this assignment, I was able to express my heartfelt appreciation for my grandmother and what she means to me. I've also found that for me, writing essays is a great way for me express myself on paper,
because it's not always so easy for me to express myself verbally. While taking this
class, I learned how to step out of my comfort zone, and to broaden the scope of my abilities. Taking this class
is a great way to learn how to expect more out of onesself rather than accepting the lowest amount of effort possible.
I was never really good at writing thesis statements, nor did did I ever really put a real effort into writing one.
Now I've learned that the thesis statement is the audience attention-grabber. The thesis statement of your paper may make
or break your entire essay.

By taking this class, I learned some valueable
techniques on brainstorming, and how this is a very beneficial way to begin an essay, rather than diving head first into
the topic of discussion. Brainstorming is a wonderful way to become aware of one's ability
to be creative, and take a look at the bigger picture of a topic, instead of just skimming over it.
This english course is also a great way to become more aware that about words and their deeper
meanings. We examined music lyrics, and learned to think out the effects of what the singer/songwriter
is trying to tell us through the music lyrics, and how to get an emotional effect out of the lyrics. I have come to appreciate
some songs more than I'd did before I really took a look at what the writer was trying to say.
Another way to broaden one's spectrum of thinking is by writings by authors of different nationalities,
and cultures. By reading the different essays, short stories, and lyrics in class, and taking an
in depth look at them, l have come to appreciate different cultures, and customs more so than ever. Taking this class
is a great way to learn about other people, how they are different than you, how they are the same as you, and what makes
everyone unique. I definitely recommened this class, not only for college freshman, but for everyone!
